Delay Tolerant Network (DTN) is a new kind of wireless communication networkarchitecture that has been designed to conquer the obstacles in data transmission ofchallenged networks, which possess an arduous condition of long latency, intermittentconnection and asymmetric channel rates. On consideration of the direct influence ofrouting algorithm on the performance of the entire network, research on routingtechnology is a significant and highly needed part of DTN studies.Firstly, Section1brings out a brief overview of current research status of DTNtogether with the perspective of trend in development, and Section2defines thearchitecture designs and standards of DTN and introduces its various routingtechnologies with the analysis of the characteristics of each different algorithm.Secondly, on basis of the research above, Section3takes the characteristics ofVANET into account, proposes a DTN routing algorithm called Motion-Aware Sprayand Search Router (MASS) based upon Spray and Wait Router and describes themethod of optimization and specific procedures of the algorithm. Afterwards, Section4introduces the Opportunistic Network Environment simulator (ONE) by describing itsstructure, models etc in brief and the procedure of its message delivery in detail. Finally, Section5starts with the implement method of MASS router in ONEsimulator and subsequently accomplishes the simulation over several classic DTNrouters and MASS router, collecting statistics covering delivery ratio, average networklatency, overhead ratio and average buffer time. Comparing the routing algorithms bypicturing the statistics mentioned above, Section5gives the analysis of the curves’variation and the different performance of each router and then proves effectivenessand reliability of the MASS router.
