Since the LXI Specification has been released, seting up an automated test systemwith the LXI bus gets widespread concern. For automated test systems, a situation thatrunning multiple instruments to complete the emergence of more functionalrequirements often appers. so the time synchronization implementation among everyinstrument is special important. While if every instrument needs implement timesynchronization, it is necessary using a precise time source for the automated testsystem. Most of the current high-precision timing technology uses satellite navigationsystems, such as the American GPS navigation system and the Beidou satellitenavigation system developed by Chinese independently. For the time synchronizationtechnology in the network test system, there exists network time synchronizationprotocol NTP and precise time synchronization protocol PTP.In this paper, based on the analysis the LXI specification, satellite system timingtechnology and time synchronization, we designed the functional requirements and theoverall program for the LXI timing and synchronization module. In the design,AT91RM9200and LXT971A complete the core control and the LXI interface. Beidousatellite receive module EZ3204achieves the timing function. The LXI timing andsynchronization module achieves PTP with the help of FPGA. In the software part,using the COM component technology, we develop COM based interchangeable virtualinstrument driver (IVI-COM) and a soft panel based on it. The ARM processor is portedwith embedded Linux operating system. Based on the operating system, we develop thecommand parsing program, the initialize control and data extraction and analysisprogram for EZ3204, LXI device driver and the software for the FPGA-based PTPimplementation and finally develop the web control panel.In the last, the timing accuracy and synchronization accuracy are tested and wegive an analysis for the synchronization accuracy. Test and operation result of the designshows that the theoretical analysis is correct, design is rational, the function andtechnical indicators are in line with the design requirements.
