Laser points cloud has real3D coordinate, but has a lack of real textureinformation. Under the condition of poor prior knowledge, the identifying ability ofour eyes to points cloud is very limited. Digital images are rich in texture information,its imaging effect, which is similar to what our see, is consistent with our perceptionsof reality. However, it’s unable to directly show3D reality using2D information. Iflaser points cloud and digital images can be merged, we could obtain comprehensiveinformation which includes3D coordinates and abundant texture information on thesurface of targets.Therefore, in this paper, the author proposes a method to implement theregistration of digital images and laser points cloud data, and detailed steps are given.From the view of photogrammetry, firstly by means of camera calibration, featureextraction,image matching and analytical photogrammetry, we can obtain somehomonymy Points, and then by matching the got homonymy points with thecorresponding laser scanning points, we can get the transformation parameters. Thismethod, which can reduce the complexity of the data processing and lower thehardware standard of data acquisition, is pretty practical. We study, analyze the pointscloud data and images of the Jiaozuo-door using the proposed method in the paper,and the result shows the method is feasible.Based on the matching relation of the points cloud data and images of theJiaozuo-door, we drew the Jiaozuo-door elevation, derived the points cloud skeletonand built its CAD model through the feature extraction of the Jiaozuo-door pointscloud aided by images. The experimental results show that the proposed method isfeasible in surveying of buildings, and that laser points cloud features can be got byusing images feature mapping and can be applied in field of3D modeling. Comparedwith extracting feature and modeling directly from mass points cloud, the advantagesof the method in this paper is less mathematical calculations and easy to understand,therefore, the proposed method will have a good application foreground.
