Traditional lighting control systems are characterized by manual management, inflexibility, cumbersome wiring, wasting electrical energy and other shortcomings. Atpresent, it has been already difficult for them to keep pace with human ever-growingrequirements for household and working environments. With frequent energy crisis, anintelligent lighting control system is increasingly becoming a research hot spot. Besides, thedevelopments of computer technology, communication technology, microelectronics andautomatic control technology have brought great vitality to the development of the intelligentlighting control systems. The intelligent lighting control systems have such advantages asreducing energy consumption, improving light quality and extending life of luminaries.Wireless sensor and actuator network (WSAN) technology is an integration of sensors, embedded computing, distributed information processing technology, wirelesscommunication, collaboration and so on. Sensor nodes sense environmental conditions, whileactuator nodes are responsible for changing the environment; the sensor nodes and theactuator nodes rely on wireless communication. The lighting control systems incorporatedwith WSAN make themselves towards networking, energy-saving and intelligence. The hardware and software design of an intelligent lighting control system based onWSAN is presented in this paper. Control algorithms can be realized via C language onembedded microchips, which narrows the gap between theory and practice. Since previouslighting control algorithms rarely involve uniformity problem, using collaborative sensing andactuation, a collaborative lighting control algorithm considering both illumination anduniformity is proposed. Taking traditional PID law as the control kernel and adopting themethod of collaboration and coordination, a synchronous distributed light control algorithm ispresented, which obtains an advantage of dealing with nonlinear lighting systems andconduces to improving systems’ scalability and real-time performance. Besides, with respectto the reduced network life span brought by synchronization mechanism, an asynchronousdistributed algorithm is further proposed. In addition to obtaining the advantages of the synchronous algorithm, the asynchronous algorithm is more easily applied to practicalsystems.
