Algebra knowledge is very important in mathematical learning concent, and number of letters is the basis of algebra, directly affect the quality. However, this for the students of grade seven, "with letters" means that the students will be taken from areas into algebra, the number of the students’ thinking level also experienced from specific to general, the image of a leap into the abstract. Found by grade seven teacher interviews and questionnaires to the students, there are quite a few students on understanding and application of the number of letters are very difficult. Therefore, the research for the seven grade students to solve have a vital significance about the "letters" content, is to lay a solid foundation for further study of the algebraic knowledge in the future。In fuyun county no.1 middle school in seventh grade students as the research object, and analysed on the basis of existing research and reflection, to explore the seventh grade students to "with letters" knowledge learning problems and their causes and explore the corresponding teaching strategies, specific USES the questionnaire survey, interviews and classroom observation to collect research data. The survey found that the number of students in grade seven has the following difficults:(1)the concept of variable;(2)the number of letters to understand;(3)the number of letters algebra variant and its practical application. The main reason is:(1) primary school mathematics study has been to calculate is given priority to, but it ignores the awareness and understanding of letters;(2) the students’ thinking level is specific and intuitive, abstract thinking ability is weak, have not reached the ability of learning and understanding the relevant algebra knowledge; Through teaching experiment contrast the following effective teaching strategies:(1) introduction letter number in advance, strengthening practice;(2) pay attention to the concept of variable teaching;(3) pay attention to students’ experience and cognitive law;(4) good at summarizing similar types of questions.
