Modern prose teaching, as one of the most important parts in Chinese teaching in middle schools, is vital for improving the students’ ability of thinking about the connotation of the text,perceiving writers’ emotion, acquiring aesthetic pleasure and promoting aesthetic ability. Nowadays, however, traditional modern prose teaching still exist a number of problems, such as over-reliance on the teaching references,exam-oriented text comprehension,misusing multimedia, overly pursuing activity form design, partially splitting text, ignoring the overall perception, neglecting text language and so on. Under such teaching mode,the classroom will gradually lack the affective interaction between teachers and students, besides, students’ unique self emotional experience will lost. what’s more, students will ignoring the vitality and affectivity of modern prose, they can’t appreciate the charm of the modern prose anymore.In the tide of the new curriculum reform, how to effectively teach the modern prose has become a hot topic. Lately, I was inspired by the close reading of Western New Criticism, and I combine the close reading with the reality of modern prose teaching in middle school, so as to stimulate students’ interest in reading, awaken students’ rich emotional experience, and enhance teaching quality. The close reading of Western New Criticism sees text as center, emphasizes the importance of words,and gives an intensive analyses on text. In this paper, I introduce the close reading into modern prose teaching, then I reform and develop this method in order to adapt to modern prose teaching in middle school, we describe it as close reading under the context of the reading teaching. The purpose of the close reading under the context of the reading teaching is to serve the modern prose teaching,and it explores the applicability and possibility on modern prose teaching.This paper is composed of three chapters. The first chapter discuss the close reading theory of Western New Criticism, on basis of it, I bring in and summarize the meaning and character of close reading under the context of the reading teaching.Besides, I discuss the stylistic features of prose, which is suitable for close reading,namely the affection is transparent and sincere, the artistic conception is mellow, the language is beautiful and vivid, the character is form loose but spirit gather. The second chapter is the present situation analysis of prose teaching in middle school,it lists some problems in current modern prose teaching from five aspects:underestimatethe importance of modern prose, superficial text reading, over-reliance on references,misusing multimedia, exam-oriented text comprehension. The second chapter is the strategy of how to use the close reading in modern prose teaching, and put forward from chant, language, emotion, context four aspects to research. Besides, I point out the common mistakes in close reading, and remind teachers to caution it.
