New Curriculum Reform requires that the teacher-center teaching model should be changed to a collaborative teaching model. It also emphasizes the significance of class participation and interaction. Participation and communication are crucial to the process of language learning. In the English classroom teaching of senior high school, however, students often keep silence to teacher’s questions. This silent behavior is not only detrimental to the improvement of students’ English level, but harmful to classroom activities. This research is to find out the causes of the silence, so as to explore the solutions of it and construct an active classroom atmosphere.This study has adopted the combination of the methods of questionnaire, classroom observation and interview from 174 students and 8 teachers in Xinyu No.4 Middle School. From the perspective of Turn-taking theory, the author analyzed four aspects including students, teachers, the external environment and culture. Students’ factors contain lack of confidence, learning motivation, their own personality and language ability, etc. Teachers’ factors mainly include the teaching method, questioning strategies, classroom feedback and teacher’s personal charm, etc. External environmental and cultural factors are about the influence of Chinese traditional culture, classroom atmosphere, the relationship between teachers and students or students and students, and class culture, etc.According to the above results and analysis, this paper gives the following suggestions: first, students should have correct learning attitude and improve the level of English by adjusting their learning strategies. Teachers should help them to restore confidence so as to promote the ability of knowledge utilization. Second, English teachers should pay attention to improving personal charm and the concept of education. Only their idea changed, can improve the teaching methods and the way of asking questions fundamentally. Teachers should also give the students positive encouragement to inspire students’ enthusiasm with flexible activities. Finally, both negative influence of traditional culture and English culture atmosphere is important to the students. We should try to overcome the negative one and keep the active one. Teachers should help students to build colorful classroom environment to drive students’ emotions. Teachers should pay attention to maintain the harmonious relationship between students and teachers, and also give a further reform to the current evaluation system of English consciously.This paper, on the whole, provides a certain reference value to improve the students’ enthusiasm to participate in classroom interaction and efficiency of English teaching.
