A Comparative Study Between Culture Of Kaiming English Books And Go For It

Culture is an important content and essential part of English learning. English Curriculum Standard also requires students should understand cultural differences, cultivate the spirit of patriotism and strengthen the consciousness of the world. Focusing on Chinese and western cultures in the teaching materials can not only improve learners’ ability to identify and appreciate foreign culture, their sensitivity of Chinese culture but also deepen their understanding of foreign culture and cultivate their spirit of patriotism. As carriers of the foreign language teaching, textbooks play an important role in introducing western culture in junior high school English.The study is based on the comparative study between culture of Kaiming English Books and Go for it. The comparisons are made from following aspects, culture percent, and ways of culture import and external cultural characteristics of the textbooks. Firstly, cultural materials on Chinese and western culture in the two sets of textbooks are selected and analyzed, and then the ways of culture import are compared, too. Finally the external cultural characteristics of the two sets of textbooks are compared from different perspectives including writers, illustrations, editing systems and genres of texts.Based on the comparative study, the similarities and differences of cultural characteristics of the two sets of textbooks can be shown. According to the different ways of culture import in the textbooks, the paper explores how to import Chinese and western culture in junior high school English books. It also puts forward some pedagogical implications and to compilation of English textbooks and development of foreign culture education.
