Chinese characters teaching is an important part of teaching Chinese as a second language. Because of the unique system of Chinese characters, teaching Chinese characters has been a difficult part of teaching Chinese as a second language. This article focuses on primary-stage Chinese language learners who initially are English native speakers, and taking the example of practical Chinese teaching experience In Auburn High School, Victoria, Australia, which attempts to explore the teaching mode of teaching Chinese characters and specific characters teaching strategies, and strive to provide the actual sample for the teaching of Chinese practices.In this paper, observation, literature study, investigation and quantitative analysis are used, taking the concrete practice of Chinese characters teaching in Auburn High School in order to investigate the mode of teaching Chinese characters in stages, and on the basis of this case study to evaluate the teaching of Chinese characters in Auburn High School. At last, making specific recommendations against the existing problems of the Chinese characters teaching in Auburn High School for improvement.The first chapter introduces the topic of the article, as well as the research purpose,significance, research content and methods, the origin and status quo of the research topic.The second chapter describes the situation of Australian schools’Chinese teaching, including Chinese characters teaching in primary and secondary schools in Victoria and the Australian National Chinese syllabus profile.The third chapter focuses on the basic situation of Chinese teaching curriculum in Auburn High School, including the teaching materials, teaching objectives and principles and so forth.The fourth chapter is the key sections of this article, which illustrates the main content and specific teaching strategies of characters teaching in Auburn High School, and concludes and summarizes the mode of teaching Chinese characters in stages based on the practice.The fifth chapter is about the feedback of teaching Chinese characters in stages in Auburn High School. It is divided into two parts for learners, investigation and paper test, thus, characteristics of phased teaching of Chinese characters is summed up through analyzing the dataThe sixth chapter is the end of this article. Consideration and assessment on the basis of Auburn High School phased characters teaching practice are carried out, advantages and disadvantages of the teaching mode are pointed out;meanwhile the practical recommendations are proposed against the problems of Chinese characters teaching in Auburn High School for further optimization.
