| Practice and homework, is an important part of verbal learning. As a tool of strengthening the teaching efficiency, traditional related exercises mostly repeat the teaching content and lack of guidance on specific learning methods, resulting in the mechanization, closeness, unity and formality of the workbook.The paper gives a detailed comparison between the Wonders workbook series published by the McGraw-hill Companies in 2014 and the Chinese textbook series for compulsory education in elementary Chinese textbooks,which published by People Education Publishing House (from grade one to grade six) from the perspectives of design philosophy, arranging structure, and the structure of content. Besides, the systematicness and scientificity of their reading teaching and writing teaching will be explored as well, with the purpose of discovering their significance and values.At the beginning, this thesis gives a introduction of the design concept and value criterion of Chinese and American Language Curriculum Standards, makes a contrast between these two different standards, and puts forward the inner relationship between them. Then this thesis gives a detailed analysis of the content and structure of the Chinese and American workbooks, representing their own specific advantages. What’s more, according to the comparison between some of Chinese and American concrete cases, the similarities and differences of Chinese and American workbooks will be revealed, highlighting the features of their exercise designs respectively. In the end, a conclusion can be drawn that in the process of arranging the structure, the workbook should be systematic and scientific; during ability training, students’ ability of thinking should be emphasized; evaluation methods should be diversified and in some necessary cases, teachers should teach students in a different way according to their different academic background and ability.The aim of this comparative study is not to rank these two series of workbooks but to discover their advantages and disadvantages at the same time, so that the reform of our Chinese workbooks can be promoted. Because the innovation of workbooks are closely related with that of textbooks, the study of design features of workbooks must be helpful for the reform of textbooks and the construction of our course. |
