Yan-Li School is an important materialism school formed in the 17th century in China. Its founder is the famous scholar of Yan Yuan and Li Gong at the early Qing dynasty. They advertise "pragmatic learning", promoting "pragmatic writing, pragmatic action, pragmatic experience, and pragmatic application". They stand in opposition to the traditional Confusion school of idealist philosophy of the Song and Ming dynasties in the feudal society, generating great influences in the society. Yan-Li School is a new academic school which made a breakthrough in the traditional thinking culture in the Chinese thinking sector of 17th century. Their education thinking impacted the traditional education greatly. This paper makes study on the educational thoughts of pragmatism held by Yan-Li School.Yan Yuan is the founder of Yan-Li School and Li Gong inherited and spread the thoughts of Yan Yuan. This paper takes the thoughts of education of Yan Yuan and Li Gong as the research objective, mainly discusses the philosophical foundation and connotation of the formation of their thoughts of education, its influences on the modern thinking as well as its social position. The first chapter mainly describes the life story of Yan Yuan and his criticism on the Confusion school of idealist philosophy of the Song and Ming dynasties, analyzing the reasons and thinking process of Yan Yuan in proposing the educational thoughts of pragmatism. The second chapter first discusses why Li Gong learned after Yan Yuan and advocated Yan School, and then illustrates Li Gong’s development and inheritance on the thinking of Yan Yuan. The third chapter mainly explains the education objectives, education content and education methods of Yan Yuan and Li Gong and analyzes and summarizes the reasons and thinking foundation for them to propose such an avocation. The fourth chapter mainly analyzes the superior points and limitations of the education thinking of Yan-Li School compared with traditional education thinking. The fifth chapter mainly illustrates status and problems of Chinese modern education in different development stages and tries to reveal the enlightenment significance of the Yan-Li educational thoughts of pragmatism for our modern education.Education decides the future of a country, and even decides the future of the world. The "pragmatic writing, pragmatic action, pragmatic experience, pragmatic application" held by Yan-Li educational thoughts of pragmatism is also significant in the modern society.
