It is known that language knowledge is very important in English teaching, but the role of grammar has always been a controversial issue in foreign language teaching. There were many reforms on grammar teaching in our country before. However, affected by all kinds of factors, English grammar class is still dominated by traditional teaching methods, and the role of teachers can not be neglected, which doesn’t reflect students-centered teaching theory. Therefore, the National English Curriculum Standards for senior high school clearly point out that the focus of the reform is to optimize English grammar teaching, and students are encouraged to participate in classroom activities and cooperate with others so as to develop their language and communicative ability.Cooperative learning is from America. It is a new learning model in the form of small groups, which is to encourage students to cooperate in order to achieve great result. In view of the advantages of cooperative learning, this paper is an empirical study of cooperative learning on grammar teaching. During the study, the thesis makes full use of cooperative learning theory, such as Group Dynamic Theory and Constructivism and so on. The main research questions are:(1)Whether cooperative learning will arouse students’ interests and increase their enthusiasm of learning English?(2)Is cooperative learning method more effective than traditional methods in improving students’ grammar achievement so that it is more beneficial for students to learn English grammar?The experiment is conducted in two classes which have similar English level in a senior high school in Chongqing, the participants are 107 senior one students. In the process of grammar teaching, the writer choose one as the experimental class, in which the cooperative learning approach are applied, while the other as the control class, which still uses the teacher-centered approach. During the study, the writer uses questionnaires, interviews, classroom observation and tests as the instruments. After collecting and analyzing results of all materials, the writer makes some conclusion at last.After the analysis of those results, we can find that cooperative learning is more beneficial for students to learn English grammar than traditional method. The cooperative learning method can arouse the interests and increase the enthusiasm of senior high school students in English grammar learning process, and improve their cooperative and communicative abilities. At the same time, with cooperative learning method, the grammar achievement of experimental class has been increased, which is an effective strategy for grammar teaching and learning. Besides, there is some inspiration on the English teaching, such as the change of teachers’ roles, and the teacher should make a good preparation for each grammar class of cooperative learning, which are also the direction for the further research.
