Abstract/Summary:
The importance of vocabulary in language learning is recognized by all of us. It is the basis of learning a language. And it’s the prerequisite for listening, speaking, reading and writing in learning a language. However, under heavy schoolwork, most students have no time to memorize words. Even though they memorize these,they also forget them quickly, so it makes students lose their interest in learning English. Therefore the author tries to apply the theory of cooperative learning in the junior high school English vocabulary teaching, and to explore a new way of vocabulary teaching, which can improve the effectiveness of vocabulary learning and learning enthusiasm.Cooperative learning theory was originated from America in the early 20 th century, now it applied in various educational activities. It has a positive effect on improving students’ academic performance and promoting the development of students’ non-cognition. However, the application of cooperative learning theory is not much in junior high school English vocabulary teaching, as compared to the other teaching approaches. So the theory of cooperative learning is applied to English vocabulary teaching in junior high school in order to improve their vocabulary learning quality and to cultivate their learning interest and cooperative consciousness. The study makes the experiment in two classes of 64 people for two months, who are chosen from the Yingcai junior high school, one class is made of 32 people and acts as the experimental class and the remaining people is the control class. The cooperative learning theory is adopted in experimental class vocabulary teaching, while the traditional vocabulary teaching method is adopted in control class. Before the experiment the both classes has the pre-test to make sure their achievements whether they have the same level. And then 2 months later, they have the post-tested to check their learning effect. And the students in the experimental class are surveyed with the questionnaire. The data is analyzed by used SPSS data analysis system and Excel data processing software. This thesis focuses on the following two questions:1) Can cooperative learning method improve junior high school students’ English vocabulary achievements?2) Can cooperative learning method increase junior high school students’ cooperating consciousness?The results show that cooperative learning approach to English vocabulary teaching is better than traditional vocabulary teaching effects. It can effectively improve the students’ vocabulary achievement, and increase the students’ cooperative consciousness and learning interest.
