ObjectiveThis study aimed to investigate the prevalence rate of depressive symptoms in middle school students, Compare the differences in gender, grade and parental rearing styles, explore the relationship between middle school students depressive symptoms and parental rearing styles based on the epidemiological investigation of the provincial key middle school students in Zhengzhou. Our conclusion would provide some scientific advices and correction direction for parents to bring up their children, and it may also provide relevant evidence for the government departments, what’s more, it may provide references for the following mental health work in Zhengzhou.MethodOur demographic questionnaire was designed based on the literature analysis and expert consultation, and we selected the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale(CES-D) and Egna Minnen Barndoms Uppfostran(EMBU) as a tool to investigate epidemiological situation of adolescent depressive symptoms. We selected the students from Junior Grade One to Senior Grade Three, and selected two classes randomly in each grade as the target population, and we distributed the questionnaire on the spot to the target population. Establishing database and inputting data with software Epidata3.1, analyzing data with SPSS21.0. The statistical methods included Nonparametric test, t test, variance analysis, correlation analysis, multiple regression analysis, to test the level of α=0.05 was statistically significant.Results(1)The depression symptoms detection rate of a provincial key middle school students was 21.36% in Zhengzhou, The differences in gender was not statistically significant. The depression symptoms detection rate in different grades had obvious discrepancy.(2)For different gender, grade and the level of suffering from the diseases had obviously different. The difference of father’s excessive interference, rejection, preference dimension, over protection, mother’s emotional warmth, severely punishes, preference between junior school students and senior school students were significant. The scores of father’s severely punishes, excessive interference, rejection, mother’s over protection in obviously depressive symptoms groups was higher than possible and none depressive symptoms groups. The scores of parents’ emotional warmth, understanding, preference dimension was lower than possible and none depressive symptoms groups. The difference of father’s rejection between none depressive symptoms group and possible depressive symptoms group were significant.(3)For emotional warmth, understanding, excessive interference, rejection, preference dimension, mothers rearing style score higher than father’s score.(4)Both father’s emotional warmth and mother’s emotional warmth were significantly negative correlation with CES-D scores. It shows significant positive correlation between father’s punishment, father’s over interference, father’s denial, father’s over protective, mother’s excessive interference, mother’s denial, mother’s severely punishes and CES-D scores. We found that four factors including father’s emotional warmth, father’s punishment, mother’s denial and father’s protective could predict the CES-D score. Inspection found that the regression equation can well explain the CES-D score.Conclusion(1) The differences in gender were not statistically significant. The depression symptoms detection rate in different grades had obvious discrepancy.(2) Parents adapt different parenting styles to different sexes and grades students. There were differences between the possible symptoms of depression group and no symptoms of depression symptoms group in father’s rejection which was statistically significant, and there was no significant difference in the other dimensions.(3) Mother’s rearing style factor score higher than father except in the punishment dimension, and other parenting style factor score is lower than the father; the difference is statistically significant.(4) Father’s emotional warmth, father’s punishment, father’s protective, mother’s denial can predict the CES-D score.
