For a long time, English grammar teaching has been a hot topic. Explicit instruction,also called interpretive method, refers to learning the rules of the English grammar to master this grammar item. It stresses learning English grammar rules purposefully. In this way, learners can use this grammar item accurately. Implicit instruction, also called suggestion method, refers to making learners achieve the grammar knowledge under the meaningful English context. The English context is created and designed by the teacher.The integration of explicit and implicit instruction(IEI instruction) makes the two instructions combined effectively. Ellis(2003) instituted that the best teaching instruction is to combine the explicit instruction and the implicit instruction.This present study focuses on the following questions:(1) Which one will be more helpful to improve students’ attitude towards learning English grammar, the traditional instruction or IEI instruction(the integration of explicit instruction and implicit instruction)?(2) Which one will be more effective to increase students’ scores in grammar, the traditional instruction or IEI instruction(integration of explicit instruction and implicit instruction)?In the experiment, 60 participants from two parallel classes are selected as control class(CC) and Experimental class(EC) from Grade Eight of No. 44 Junior High School in Dalian. Students in CC received the traditional instruction and students in EC received the IEI instruction(the integration of explicit and implicit instruction). At the beginning of the experiment, students both in CC and EC were asked to do the pre-test(test and questionnaire) for their level in English grammar. After four months teaching with the two kinds of instructions, the participants of CC and EC took the post- test(test, questionnaire and interview). Data of the pre-test and post-test was collected and analyzed by using SPSS 17.0.The results demonstrate that scores of students’ grammar test in EC increased more than that of students from CC. Students from EC had a more positive attitude towards learning English grammar. They became more confident and willing to learn English grammar. In brief, IEI instruction is more effective to teach English grammar in Junior High School.This thesis is the empirical research of English grammar teaching in junior high school. It provides the foundation of English grammar teaching in junior high school. Italso brings significance and value of the research.
