English reading is always the focus and difficult point in English learning, which is also a relatively important measure to evaluate the overall quality and all-round ability of a student?s English. Therefore, we can?t emphasize more the importance of carrying out effective English reading teaching to help and guide the students to apply and grasp English in junior high schools. In recent years, Education Ministry of our country has put forward a specific task for English teaching in junior high schools. It requires the teachers gradually cultivate the students to have better reading abilities and to have the abilities of self-reading under the guidance of teachers.Since New English Standards came into effect, schools in a lot of areas pay more attention to English reading teaching. Most schools have been trying actively and exploring continuously the effective methods and ways of improving English reading teaching. Among them, a new method arouses the interest and catches the attention of the author, which is recently explored and applied widely in many schools. It is called the teaching model of “Guided Learning Plans” which refers to a teaching method fulfilled together by teachers and students, in which the teachers design the “Guided Learning Plans” in advance according to the real situations of learning materials and students and give them out to the students and then students apply them into the whole process of learning English.Hence, in order to apply “Guided Learning Plans” to improve the effects of English reading teaching and enhance the students? reading abilities, the author investigated some students and all teachers at school to carry out a survey and a study which lasted for a whole year. During this process, the author handed out three kinds of questionnaires. Based on the results of the feedback, the author designed some better "Guided Learning Plans" that could meet the needs of the reading teaching from the aspects of students? learning. According to different reading materials, the author designed the "Guided Learning Plans" in two kinds: the ones handed “before the class” and the ones handed “during the class” so as to achieve different teaching goals of cultivating and improving students ? various reading strategies and skills in English reading classes. Meanwhile, the author also carried out an experiment in two classes of Grade Eight to prove the effectiveness of applying the "Guided Learning Plans" into English reading teaching by analyzing the results of two reading comprehensive exams. The results turned out that applying different kinds of "Guided Learning Plans" in English reading teaching has far more advantages than traditional teaching methods. Not only the students? English reading interests and autonomies but also their English reading strategies and skills have been proved to improve a lot to an extent. Meanwhile, through comparing the results of two exams in the experiment, it?s also not difficult to find out that applying the “Guided Learning Plans” in English reading teaching by English teachers to improve the students? reading abilities in junior high schools is quite effective.
