To evoke students’ mental development, questioning is an indispensable teaching method. According to English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education published in 2011, under the guidance of the teachers, students are encouraged to discover language rules, master basic language knowledge and skills, learn to adjust affect, master learning strategies and develop their ability to learn autonomously through various means. Therefore, questioning can not only help students master learning strategies, but also develop their ability of autonomous learning.Based on the studies on questioning in English class, theoretically supported by Krashen’s Input Hypothesis (1985) and dialogue theory, the research wants to analyze the current status of questioning in English class in junior high school and get a better understanding of students’ requests and opinions on questioning. It aims to find stategies to optimize the English questioning and help students to learn autonomously. To reach the aim, the researcher studied 5 teachers and 20 classes in Nanchang No.2 Middle School. Based on the observation records, the results of 300 students’ questionnaires and the interviews with teachers and 20 students, the researcher analyzed the types of questions, the distribution of questioning, and the utterance during questioning, the waiting time, the feedback and so on. Besides, students’ expectation and opinions on questioning are also required to help English class questioning come out of the current dilemma and find optimizing strategies to have an efficient class. What’s more, it’s more important to teach students to think and study in a proper way.To optimize English class questioning strategies and improve students’ autonomous study, teachers should:(1) Rationally design questions before class; (2) Give enough waiting time to students for proper thinking; (3) Use strategies to inspire and encourage students so that they can really be in the class; (4) Use various ways to feedback, especially positive feedback; (5) Establish new teaching philosophy, let students be the owner of the class. |
