| Based on teaching strategies to English reading and theory of thinking pattern, the research is made on the basis of interviewing linguistic data from all the English teachers for grade one in a local senior middle school. In consideration with the current English teaching situation, the dissertation aims to discuss the possible methods to foster students’ thinking abilities effectively. Its main findings draw upon the following aspects:reading strategy of English teaching, logic thinking strategies, critical thinking strategies and creative thinking strategies as summarized below:(1) The major problems existing in the senior English teaching include:1) the invariability of teaching materials; 2) the obscure of lesson types; 3) the neglect of reading skill guidance; (4) the deficiency of effective feedback.(2) The major causes for the deficiency of the thinking abilities in a senior English lesson includes:1) the tedium of the reading materials; 2) the neglect of thinking ability; 3) the un-innovative mode of language learning.(3) Students’linguistic skills and thinking abilities could be improved on condition that both teacher and students regard reading as a delightful experience.(4) Appropriate approaches should be adopted in reading lessons according to different thinking abilities. For instance, to foster the logical thinking ability, the following strategies could be used:1) identifying the subject, frame and clue of the passage; 2) trying to find the logical clues in the passage; 3) applying various activities in classroom teaching. To foster the critical thinking ability, strategies could include:1) introducing critical way of thinking to students; 2) encouraging questions of critical thinking; 3) breaking fixed thinking modes; 4) planning effective after-reading activities. To foster the creative thinking ability, the following strategies could be employed:1) innovating teaching modes; 2) applying creative teaching method; 3) assigning creative homework.In agreement with the current trend in English reading teaching, the dissertation is of constructive value to foster students’thinking ability. |
