The relationship between language and thinking has long been attached importance to by linguists and educators. The high school students have possessed some certain thinking abilities due to their developed intelligence level and the knowledge accumulated during the learning process. However, how the English classroom teaching in senior middle school helps cultivate the students’ thinking abilities in a further way is still a field worthwhile to explore, which in turn will benefit their future learning. The teaching in reality lacks the awareness and practical methods to develop the students’ thinking abilities, which is the main problem the study aims to tackle. If we train their thinking skills effectively in English classes, they will obtain the ability to learn independently, which is beneficial to their life-long study.Based on the findings made by the previous studies and some learning theories, the study firstly talks about the definitions of thinking ability and the range of abilities that the high school students are supposed to have. Moreover, according to the research about the current situation of students’ learning and teachers’ teaching, the study further clarifies the practical significance of cultivating students’ thinking abilities by English classroom teaching in senior middle school.
