PBL, also known as problem-based learning is one of learning methods through which students can solve problems by setting themselves in a specific learning situation. PBL, based on constructivism, is a learning process in which real-life problems motivate students to undertake both independent and collaborative learning. As students are involved in authentic learning activities, they make use of various resources to get information, and discuss and solve the problems by means of independent learning and cooperative learning. PBL, as a curriculum development approach, emphasizes student-centered learning and teacher as a tutor and a facilitator. This thesis discusses the application of PBL in English writing teaching for senior high school students. In this paper, firstly, it expounds the concept of PBL and principles of applying PBL in English writing teaching:secondly, it analyzes and summarizes the PBL researches all over the world; thirdly, it analyzes the problems existed among high school students through questionnaires and examples of students’ writing; finally, through the application of PBL in senior students, it shows that PBL can stimulate the students’learning initiative and improve their abilities of getting information and dealing with the problems, it also can make students not only be able to write articles for a topic, but also help students express certain ideas clearly. In addition, this paper proposes a teaching model in allusion to the practice of applying PBL into English writing teaching. Above all, this thesis aims to pedagogically improve high school students’writing ability in light of PBL approach.
