It is universally acknowledged that reading plays a crucial role in teaching English. The New Curriculum Standard presents that the goal of cultivating and improving students’ reading ability should be put in the first place in English reading teaching(2003). However, reading is usually a weakness in actual reading teaching. There’re several reasons for it, such as students’ unsatisfactory performance in class; less interest and confidence in English reading; time-wasting and low-efficiency of new words learning; negligence of whole context and so on. However, Guided Learning Plan is the plan of learning compiled by teachers, which is applied for students to acquire knowledge actively and independently so as to improve their reading ability.Nowadays, there’re some schools making use of Guided Learning Plan to teach English in our country. This thesis conducts a study on the application to English reading with the help of Guided Learning Plan and two methods of questionnaires and tests within 16 weeks in two classes of Grade 2 in No.3 Senior High School in Lvshun. This study tries to deal with the following three questions:(1) Can Guided Learning Plan improve students’ performance in English reading class?(2) Can Guided Learning Plan arouse students’ interest and confidence in English reading?(3) Is Guided Learning Plan effective for students to improve their English reading ability and efficiency? This thesis is composed of five chapters. Chapter One shows a concise introduction to the research purpose, significance and problems of the English reading in senior high school; Chapter Two presents literature review and theoretical bases, the former includes the research on Guided Learning Plan abroad and at home and the latter includes the Discovery Learning Theory and Constructive Learning Theory; Chapter Three is the research methodology, introducing the subjects and instruments, the methods and the procedures of this study; Chapter Four presents the results, data analysis and discussions from the experiments; Chapter Five is the conclusion which gives the findings, limitations and solutions to the future studies. Finally, the research results demonstrate that Guided Learning Plan is superior to the traditional teaching method. The study shows that the use of Guided Learning Plan in English reading teaching can improve the students’ performance in English reading class, arouse the students’ interest and confidence in English reading and enhance the students’ reading ability. Guided Learning Plan in English reading teaching is effective in pedagogical activities. However, due to the influence of various factors, there are still some shortcomings in this study. We hope the results of this study can provide reference for the further research on the application of Guided Learning Plan in China.
