Since the implementation of the new curriculum, all levels of the education system and teachers are response to the call of the new curriculum and continue to explore cooperation, autonomy, inquiry learning mode. But in reality, high school teaching is focusing on performance. In this case, many teachers dare to try, still using the traditional "spoon-fed", "chalk and talk" teaching mode, which is difficult to arouse the passion of students. Teachers who use the same teaching methods for a long time will inevitably lose interest in the classroom. So that the classroom atmosphere is dull and the teaching efficiency is low. High school is a critical period of emotional and intellectual development of the students, but also a critical period of developing learning ability of students. High school education has an important influence for lifelong development of students. Therefore, How to train and develop students’ thinking skills and improve their self-learning ability has become an important task of high school geography teaching, and also an important issue in today’s education.Mind mapping is proposed by the well-known British scholar Tony ? Buzan in the 1960 s. It is a kind of visual thinking tool based on radioactive thinking model. The radioactive structure uses the theme as the backbone, emitting from the center to around. Mind Mapping through combining pictures, graphics, words, integrate the cumbersome and complex knowledge in the image and intuitive way, showing the hierarchy between concepts and the order relationship of the thinking and realizing the visual representation of concept. This visualization allows users think problem from a global and overall view and thus can improve the flexibility of the user’s thinking and divergent thinking ability. Geography is comprehensive, and the knowledge of many complexes is difficult to understand. Therefore the use of mind mapping has great advantages in geography learning. The study takes brain science theory, constructive learning theory, meta-cognitive learning theory and basic geography and other related theories as the theoretical basis and uses the methods of literature, questionnaires, interviews to research mind mapping application in geography autonomous learning. The thesis firstly master the geography independent learning ability of high school students through the questionnaire. Through investigation, it found that students self-learning ability is not high. Students lack of a strong interest in learning geography and good learning strategy. They do not make learning programs. But the self-assessment and self-testing capacity are low while the capacity of self-regulation of the learning process is relatively good. With the advantages of mind mapping using in cultivating self-learning ability of students with the theoretical basis of mind mapping, namely: increasing interest in learning, taking notes of efficiency, help develop a learning plan and build knowledge structures, it discusses the using of mind mapping in autonomous learning process and lists examples to help the readers understand the mind mapping application. The application methods are divided in to preparing and designing a lesson, learning in a lesson, reviewing and examining, resolving geography problems. Then it puts forward the corresponding application measures according to the interviews of high school teacher about the using of mind mapping. Such as enhancing learning and application of mind map of teacher, Mind Gallery established to facilitate students to learn, and pay attention to its applicability and so on. The study try to enrich self-learning theory, and help students to improve their self-learning ability, preparing for the lifelong development. Through the study found that it is feasible to improve students’ self-learning ability with the application of mind mapping in geography self-learning.The innovation of this research is it combined self-learning with mind mapping and it will help gain students’ self-learning ability based on the literature reading and actual survey. At the same time it proposed the establishment of Mind Gallery which can help students in the independent learning.
