As a derivative of the animation culture, Cosplay is an activity during which people use Costumes, accessories, props and makeup to play the roles in animations, games and other cultural works. People who are engaged in Cosplay are called Coser. Coser identity recognition is the experience of the individual Cosplay practice, and the result of group emotional attachment. With “identity recognition” as a starting point, this study will obtain first-hand information through interviews and observations and describe the real psychological state and identity recognition processes of the Coser from an objective stance. With psychology and sociology as the major disciplinary perspectives, this paper will explain the identity recognition in Coser practice, and try to explore the action style of the Coser in the Cosplay practice and the cultural psychology reflected. Based on interviews with 12 subjects and a quantitative analysis, the main findings are as follows: Coser identity recognition includes two dimensions, namely self-identity recognition and group identity recognition. Coser identity recognition has procedures and hierarchies, including prophase identity imagination, metaphase identity practice and anaphase identity crisis. First, there are two motives for the prophase identity imagination, of which, media attraction is its final motive and individual autonomous pursuit is its primary motive. It constitutes the starting point of Coser identity recognition.. Secondly, in metaphase identity practice, Coser identity is affected by self-identity recognition and group identity recognition. In the Coser practice, individuals form self-identity recognition through self-study as well as identity experience and culture. In groups, Coser mainly achieves the recognition of group identity through interaction within the group, worship for the group leader and internalization of the cultural characteristics of Cosplay Finally, with the deepening of practice, Coser will face an identity crisis, and suffer from identity continuity and degradation affected by individual cognitive involvement extent.
