Mathematical language is commonly used to express mathematical thoughts which characterized as accurate, rigorous and concise, and it’s an artificial symbol system with high abstraction. In recent years, mathematical language teaching in senior high school is not satisfying, and students’ mathematical language barrier directly affects their mastery and application of math knowledge.Function is one of the core teaching contents in senior high school. However, amount of teaching practice show that students have difficulty in learning function.Based on the concept and character of mathematical language learning, this paper aims to investigate the mathematical language barrier existing in the process of function learning by questionnaire survey to 300 students in Haikou Experimental Middle School and interview some of the students and teachers, besides, learning contents and curriculum standards of function are taken as references. From the analysis of the result, factors that lead to the mathematical language barrier are both from teachers and students. For students, because lack of learning strategies in mathematical language learning, they can’t understand the abstract expression of the lexical semantic in function and have difficulty in transforming among three mathematical languages: literacy, image and symbol. As for teachers, they couldn’t follow students’ learning pattern during the process of function teaching, in addition, their math language teaching is not flexible and formal enough. After that, this paper will propose some teaching strategies that can be used to overcome language barriers in function teaching. During the teaching process, teachers should emphasize the analysis of sentence pattern, symbolic-graphic combination and nature induction to improve students’ ability in identifying, transforming, understanding and constructing. At last, I carry out the experiment in parallel classes, and the final data from tests and interviews show that the above strategies are useful in solving problems found in mathematical language.
