Alongside with the new course reformation, portfolio has received wide concern as a evaluation tool with its evaluation idea adheres to “Based on process, promote development”, which is proposed by the new course reformation. Both the curriculum criterion and the educational laws and regulations about the reformation of the students evaluation set by the government advocate the application of portfolio in students evaluation to promote students’ development. Through careful design of the content, project, standard and other aspects, portfolio evaluates the advanced skills, learning process, personality and alike of the students according to the accomplished level of the project, becoming a useful supplement to paper-pencil test. During the summarizing of the information, some deviations of using portfolio in educational practice due to misunderstandings among educators has been revealed, failed to fully play its unique value.This paper uses the method of literature, focuses on the foreign literature, try to present the original appearance of the portfolio on the whole, and to examine the misunderstandings and the shortcomings of the portfolio use in educational practice, hoping to correct the improper understanding about the portfolio among our educational theorists. At the last, some thoughts about the application of the portfolio are proposed to promote the development of the students’ assessment.The full paper is mainly divided into four chapters:The first chapter is the introduction, this chapter mainly includes the reason of selecting the topic, the present research, the concept definition, the research purpose and significance, the research contents,the research methods and the innovation.The second chapter is the original appearance of the portfolio, on the basis of carefully study of the foreign literature, try to present a original portfolio. This chapter mainly explained the differences between the portfolio and the paper-pencil test, the evaluation content of the portfolio and the evaluation process of the portfolio, the portfolio evaluates students by clearing the evaluation purposes, the students, contents, designing the project and standards, etc.The third chapter is the misunderstandings and the shortcomings of the portfolio in the educational practice of our country, after studying the literature, the misunderstandings and the shortcomings are summarized as: losing the essence of the portfolio, leading to the operation’s simplification; the evaluation content of the portfolio narrowing; the separation between portfolio and teaching in the implementation; the lack of reflection on portfolio; the solidifying in portfolio application.The fourth chapter is the thinking to the application of the portfolio in primary and middle schools of our country, mainly put forward four ideas: improve the theoretical attainment of the researcher and the teachers in the primary and middle schools; correctly understand and scientifically apply the portfolio; make portfolio play a practical role in the senior high school entrance examination and the college entrance examination; combined with other evaluation tools to promote student assessment. In the hope of throwing out a minnow to catch a whale, to draw more attention to the portfolio, and to promote further development of student assessment among primary and middle school.
