To clearly express our idea in English is the pursuit for English learners. However,English has been taught in high schools for years, but most senior high school studentsfind it really difficult to communicate with foreigners in English, let alone students fromvocational high schools. So English teachers should reflect on the problems in theprocess of teaching oral English and pay more attention to its importance in learningEnglish. However, the traditional teaching methods have made students tired of learningspoken English, which further causes the teachers to neglect oral English teaching.Therefore, the author of this thesis, in the form of experiment, tries to apply thetask-based approach (TBA) into the oral English teaching in vocational high schools inorder to achieve effective teaching. TBA is aimed at providing opportunities for thelearners to experience and explore both spoken and written language through learningactivities which are designed to engage learners in the authentic, practical and functionaluse of language for meaningful purposes, and it also changes the previous way ofunscientific assessment. More attention is paid to students’ participation, cultivatingstudents’ positive affective attitude etc. This study tentatively explores the use of puttingTBA into the practice of English teaching in order to achieve greater efficiency inEnglish teaching and enhance students’ English studying proficiency.Based on the resultof the study, opinions will be given on what TBA is and how to employ it into theclassroom practical oral English teaching so as to cultivate students’ English learningproficiency.Further details will be discussed in this thesis.This thesis is composed altogether of five chapters. Chapter one is the background ofresearch and the existing problems in current oral English teaching in vocational highschools. Chapter two makes literature review of TBA research, introduces the definitions of task and TBA, also explains the related theories and introduces the research aboutTBA home and abroad. Chapter three is the description of the application of TBA in oralEnglish teaching in vocational high schools, including the experimental purposes,subjects, instrument and procedure. And the results and data collected before and afterexperiment are analyzed using qualitative and quantitative methods. Chapter four focuseson data collection and analysis. Chapter five just draws a conclusion to this thesis; thestudy proves the feasibility of TBA in oral English teaching for students in vocationalschool. It also gives major findings, implications, limitations and the suggestions forfurther research.
