This thesis is an empirical study of the present situation and problems of English class observation and evaluation in the middle school, which aims at putting forward corresponding improvement measures for the professional development of English teachers. The study adopted three kinds of scientific research methods:questionnaire, interview and natural survey. First of all, according to the questionnaire survey, we had the preliminary understanding of the status quo, including the opinions and motivation for class observation and evaluation of middle school English teachers, the establishment and implementation of class observation and evaluation system of middle school, the forms of class observation and evaluation of middle school, etc. Some problems were found through the analysis of the data derived from the questionnaire survey. Then some middle school English teachers were interviewed on those problems in order to get more details. Finally, the author transformed the six records of English class observation and evaluation collected in one year into texts. Based on the analysis of the discourse of the participants, an objective survey was carried out on their texts. Based on the combination of the three different surveys a conclusion was reached that there existed certain problems in the system, form, interactive mode, etc. in the class observation and evaluation of middle school English teachers. To improve class observation and evaluation of middle school English teachers and promote the teachers’professional development, some measures are offered like speeding up the construction of class observation and evaluation system, changing the ideas and constructing diversified modes for class observation and evaluation.
