| Building "world-class university" is a national strategy of higher education development in the21st century. In2010, the state promulgated the Outline which asked to improve the modern university system with Chinese characteristics and the governance structure. Public colleges and universities must adhere to and improve the responsibility system under the leadership of party committees. Against this background, the national education system reform work started at December in the same year. And this one, as an important part of education reform, university president selection, assessment, and training was put on the formal agenda, whose core issue is the university president’s competence. Therefore, from the status quo of China’s university presidents competency, we are starting to explore the issue of university presidents’competency, and making relevant recommendations for improvement, which is very important in improving our university presidents for selection, training, and evaluation system. This study used questionnaires, literature, comparative studies and analysis, inductive methods, starting from the theory of competence and literature to summarize the principal features of foreign university presidents’competencies, and through questionnaires and document analysis of university presidents we should have summarized the status quo of university presidents’competencies. And then based on this comparative study, we explore the lack of university presidents’ competencies, which include a lack of global vision of higher education, lack of financial management capacity, lack of ability to cultivate external relationships, weak capacity change and other issues. In response to these problems, we proposed some advice to improve the competence of university president’s related initiatives:(1) improve selection system of our university president;(2) establish a sound training system of university presidents, strengthen the building of institutional training;(3) improve the evaluation system of university presidents;(4) establish and improve professional markets of university presidents. |
