Today’s world has entered the era of knowledge economy and lifelong study when autonomous learning and cooperative learning is endowed with noble value and mission as an important educational objective worldwide. Cultivating students’ autonomous learning ability and cooperative communication skills have become an important educational objective worldwide. To realize this goal, significant effect can only be achieved through long term teaching in classroom which is the major ground for education. Therefore, our traditional teaching ideas, teaching mode and students’ learning styles that ignored the cultivation of autonomous learning and cooperative communication ability should be changed to conform to the trend of educational reform.English, as a foreign language to Chinese and one of the most used languages in the world, has become an important tool for international communication, technological and cultural exchanges. However, it is not easy for Chinese students to learn English well because we live in an environment where English is neither our mother tongue nor a second language. There are many factors that affect English study, apart from school’s physical environment, teachers’ professional level and students’IQ, findings revealed the significant correlation between learning styles and study results, showing the indispensable relations between effective learning styles and learning efficacy.For a long time, our basic education has overstressed passive learning characterized by reception learning, mechanical memorizing, and mechanical drills. During the process, students’ enthusiasm, thirst for knowledge, consciousness of innovation gradually decay and disappear. That’s why traditional passive learning mode can no longer accommodate the mainstream teaching thought that stresses great importance on the cultivation of autonomous learning ability and cooperative spirit. The reform on traditional passive acceptance teaching model serves as the starting point of the thesis. The analysis of the characteristics of junior English course and students’ learning is made on the basis of referring large amount of literatures and case study. Initially integrated autonomous learning and cooperative learning, a teaching model that combines and complement advantages of autonomous learning and cooperative learning, a teaching model expected to help students increase their scores is constructed, the teaching model is "Autonomous-cooperative learning".This thesis adopts qualitative research method, taking6students from Wu Han No.63Middle School as the research participants, applying the "autonomous-cooperative teaching model" in small groups for one semester,90minutes a week to train on students’ linguistics knowledge, autonomous learning ability and cooperative learning strategies during my internship. Through analyzing and processing the first hand materials acquired from observation, interview, questionnaire and test scores, the present study finds out that autonomous-cooperative learning plays a positive role in improving students’ achievement, forming good learning habits, changing emotions and attitudes, cultivating autonomous learning ability and cooperative communication ability.
