A prerequisite for the talents in China to be present on the world stage is their ability to communicate in English. However, English teaching in senior high school in China is encountered with such problems as test-oriented teaching mode and inactive learning attitude, which lead to the situation of Dumb English. It is hoped that there will be an efficient type of English class. Therefore, this research tries to reform the English teaching situation in senior high school to some extent, and thus the flipped classroom is proposed. The flipped classroom inverts traditional teaching methods, delivering instruction online outside of class and moving “homework†into the classroom. As a revolution of teaching approach, the flipped classroom was applied in Woodland Park High School in Colorado in the USA at the earliest. In 2007, the chemistry teacher of this school Tom Bergman and Aaron Sams made the teaching video for the students who could not attend for school and put the teaching video on the Internet, so that the students could catch up with the schedule. Students responded well. A flipped classroom is a classroom that swaps the arrangement of knowledge imparting and knowledge internalization in the traditional classroom. In the flipped classroom, the roles of teachers and students have been changed and the class time should have a new plan. This study focuses on the study of the flipped classroom attempting to find the effect on student’s engagement and achievement in English learning and the students’ perceptions of the use of this method. To collect effective data and make sure the availability of the research, there are four instruments of the research in the research method. They are language tests that include pre-test and post-test, questionnaires, interview which is the complement of the questionnaires and classroom observation. The author performs the experiment in the NO.1middle school in Qinyang city of Henan province from September to December in2014. The subjects of the study are made up of 137 students. The students come from two different classes in grade one of high school at the same level. The one-semester teaching practice and tests show that:(1) The flipped classroom has positive impact on the students’ engagement, learning and achievement.(2) Most of the students have positive perceptions on the flipped classroom. Most of the students consider that they are the center of the learning and the efficiency is higher than that of the traditional classroom and it is good to relieve the boring atmosphere in the classroom. | | Keywords/Search Tags: | flipped classroom, high school English teaching, students’ engagement, learning achievement | PDF Full Text Request | Related items |
