Lead-in is a basic part in English class, which will determine if the class can require the excellent extension at the first period of a class. Even though lead-in will not take too much time and efforts in the teaching process, it will affect teaching efficiency seriously and obviously. In recent years, with the development of the society and the new-curriculum-reform, teachers have had various acknowledge and action on the theory of lead-in, but the teaching effect is not very good. Especially in many rural middle schools, teachers are more busy teaching knowledge and taking tests in class. They don’t pay enough attention and give less emphasis on English lead-in, which results in unsatisfactory teaching effect. In view of this, the writer wants to have an investigation for lead-in in rural middle school and comes to understand its current and actual status in English class. Hopefully, this paper can focus on the real issue of English classroom teaching, provide logical comments and solution to the issue and improve the efficiency of English teaching by supplying enough supports and advice into lead-in.In this paper, all the teachers and students in Grade Eight of Nanjing Chengqiao Middle School are chosen as the objects for this survey. With the methods of classroom observation, questionnaire and interview, the author takes some actions on this survey. With the combination of quantitative and qualitative analysis, some conclusions below were obtained:(1) Lead-in was applied in a simple and fixed pattern by most of the teachers in rural middle school. Some teachers have realized to apply lead-in in English class, but the teaching time was randomly and not fixed. Because some misunderstanding of lead-in has existed in teachers’ thought, the expected object of lead-in in English class can not be achieved in the practical teaching and students were not taken as the center in class.(2) Generally, the feedback of the students involved in this survey is unsatisfactory. With the improvement of the educational equipment in current rural middle school, students have some basic awareness of lead-in. However, most of the teachers’ action can’t meet students’ expectation.(3) English teachers have already realized the importance of lead-in in teaching process, but most of them can’t apply it reasonably and lack of further acknowledge of lead-in, which results in the dissatisfied status.
