Classroom questioning plays a vital role in teaching approach, and also in junior high school English teaching. Classroom questioning is a main way of interaction between teachers and students, which can enhance their divergent thinking ability and their creativity ability.The thesis researches from the angle of view of junior high schools. The purpose of the thesis is to comprehend the current situation of English classroom questioning and the problems in junior high school English teaching. The thesis adopts questionnaire, classroom observation, and interview. It times to answer the questions as follows:1. What is the current situation of question types, wait-time, distribution on questioning, and feedback of classroom questioning in junior high school English teaching?2. What types of classroom questioning are the most frequently used and their effects?The author researched in Xiaotun Town First Middle School in Ping Dingshan for four months, who had observed about 50 classes of the three target teachers and also carried on the questionnaire of 100 students,while she carried out an interview on ten teachers. Based on the research of the author, there are still many problems, such as “questions are simple”, “too short or even no wait-time”, “distributions on questioning are imbalance”, “improper feedback”. The author intends to provide some suggestions, and she also intends to enhance the quality of classroom questioning.There are five parts of the research. In the first part, the author introduces the background and the significance of the research. In the second part, the author presents classroom questioning’s definition of some relevant theories, then emphasizes the classification and functions of classroom questions. The third part is research design. It contains the research’s objective, questions, subjects, and methods. In the fourth part, the research’s results and analysis will be presented. Finally the author presents the research conclusion, and provides some suggestions for future research as well as the limitations of the study.
