Reading is one of the most important ways for students to get information and improve language ability. So the teaching of reading plays an important part in middle schools. However, the reality of English is not optimistic. The author analyzes the condition in which the teaching of English reading in senior high schools are at present through a questionnaire survey. To get rid of these shortcomings in teaching, we have to employ a best method of teaching from a completely new perspective. Constructivism is an ideal theoretical perspective from which the shortcomings of senior reading teaching can be got over. This thesis has a discussion on the main views of constructivism learning theory and to prove it is feasible and effective to use the theory in the teaching of English reading in senior high schools.To start with, the thesis gives an introduction of constructivism learning theory. Then the author discusses the constructivism teaching models. According to constructivism, students are the main and active constructors of knowledge but at the same time the teachers are directors and organizers in the English reading teaching.After that, the author tries to discover the application of constructivism learning theory to the teaching practice. Through lesson presentation, the effective strategies which English teachers of high school can use to improve their teaching are proposed on the basis of the constructivism theory, for example, the design of teaching goal, cooperation study, establishment situation, creative use of textbooks, the final aim of learning process---meaning construction, etc.Finally, The author carried out teaching experiment for half a semester, selecting two classes in the school the author worked as the experimental object. The author used the traditional teaching method in one class, while employed the teaching method based on constructivism theory in another. By comparing different teaching effect, the author draws useful conclusions that employing the constructivism teaching approach can promote the teaching of English reading in senior high schools greatly and that this English teaching theory should be popularized and promoted so that the level of teaching English reading in senior high schools can be improved constantly.
