The ancient institutions of higher education in China have a deep affect on inheriting, studying and developing traditional Chinese culture, cultivating professionals, civilizing people, promoting social progress in ancient times, etc.. In today’s society, with the presenting of governance theories, colleges or universities governance has attracted attention of scholars at home and abroad. As a country with a long history and profound culture, China’s system and governance modes of colleges and universities have been enriched, changed and developed; although they are restricted and influenced by political, economic, cultural factors in ancient times, and have their own delayedness, their experiences and governance modes with Chinese characteristics still have crucial reference meaning for today’s governance modes of colleges and universities. Based on a large amount of historical literature, this thesis summarizes the basic situation of governance mode of Chinese ancient institutions of higher education by combining the history and reality, and then has a deep study on it, getting the reference and experience for today’s governance of colleges and universities in our country.This thesis is divided into five parts. The first part is the introduction. The main contents of this part include the significance of the study, literature review, basic content of the study, concept definition and the approaches and methods of study. The second part of the thesis expounds some theories of governance modes of higher education institution, mainly selected the bureaucracy theory, self-organization theory and flat management theory as the theoretical basis of this study. The third part shows the evolution process of governance modes of Chinese ancient higher education institutions. As the clue of its own development, the evolution process is divided into three stages which are embryonic stage, shaping stage and maturation stage. The fourth part is the analysis of the governance modes of Chinese ancient higher education institutions, which mainly studies the structure, content and characteristics of the governance of ancient higher education institutions. The fifth part, combining the current situation of colleges and universities’ governance, clarifies the reference and significance of ancient higher education institutions’ governance modes for today’s governance of colleges and universities from the aspects of the rule of law to university, the power of governments and universities, the governance modes of universities and the internal governance of universities. The third part and the fourth part are the main parts and emphases of this thesis.
