The reading ability is known as the most stable and durable among the foreign language abilities. Many students want to enhance their English ability by reading. Reading is the most effective way for the students to get information so that it is necessary to perfect the way of reading in the course of English teaching. But as we all know, there are many problems in the reading teaching. Therefore, it is necessary to improve the students’ reading ability by a certain way especially for the high grade students in primary schools.Schema theory is from cognitive psychology and it belongs to abstract knowledge system. Definitions of the schema are various and different, but the core schema theory is that the schema is an organized knowledge structure just like a network which can provide a framework and direction of processing for comprehension. And the schema theory combines the current information and prior information in the processing of information input, and then achieves the goal of constructing the concept map for knowledge system. Finally through the relevant system, the students can improve their comprehension ability.The research object of this article is the high grade students in a primary school. This article wants to improve the students’ English reading ability by using the Schema Theory. At the same time, the testing data collected through the experiment elaborates the effect of the English reading teaching for the schema theory. By testing and comparing the 94 students in the experiment group, the author of this article records the data through the interviews from the 20 students among the two groups. Based on the analysis of the above results, the author draws the conclusion that the schema theory in the respect of enhancing the English reading ability for primary school students is both feasible and effective.
