English, as one of the most widely used language in the world, plays an important role in interacting and obtaining all kinds of information. English learning is a language subject. The four basic skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing is a whole. Reading, which is the foundation of listening, speaking, writing, plays a leading role in English learning. Moreover, in recent years, reading comprehension and the other English questions of indirectly testing students’ reading ability accounts for more than half of the entire paper in National Matriculation English Test. Therefore, the cultivation of students’ English reading ability is very important.There are too many students in a traditional English reading teaching classroom, teachers give lessons to the whole class in the front of the classroom, while students only sit there taking notes. It results in few chances for students to practice, lack of teacher-student, student-student interaction. This teaching method may make students sleepy in class, and therefore it is hard to motivate students’ reading motivation and interest for English reading. And students’ reading ability is not satisfactory. They lack of sufficient vocabulary, reading skills, a large amount of reading. Their slow reading speed is slow, and most important they are not interested in English reading. Due to there’re still some general problems and deficiencies in English reading of senior high school students. It is necessary to discover a new effective teaching method.In view of this, the author thinks that it has become a pressing matter for the moment to explore efficient reading teaching methods. In order to reform the traditional English reading teaching method in senior high school, improve the students’ reading ability. The author of this paper selected the students of class 21 and class 22 as the subjects of the research. The students were from Xingtai No. 3 Middle School. It is a preliminary exploration on cooperative learning in senior high school English reading teaching. In the process of the study, the author respectively adopted different teaching methods in the experimental class and control class. The experimental class adopted the cooperative learning mode. The author took the students as center, and started from the subjects’ position, but the control class still adopted the traditional teaching method. The teacher is the center of the classroom.The author adopted the experimental control method, through the questionnaire, the interview, the English reading test to collect data. It aims to find out whether the cooperative learning can change the students’ interest in reading, improve the students’ reading ability, and increase English achievement.After a semester’s experiment, and reflection, finally the researcher found the application of cooperative learning to English reading teaching has achieved the desired results. It has important positive effect on improving students’ reading comprehension ability. It can reduce the anxiety of students about reading, stimulate their interest in reading, and improve students’ learning self-confidence. Students become interested in English reading, and develop extracurricular reading habits. Finally, through the questionnaires, the interviews, the individual communication, the feedbacks can be seen from the major exams, the cooperative learning model does improve the students’ reading interests, improve their reading ability.
