English reading is one of the ways of gaining information rapidly as the society information goes fast. Reading is a key part of English learning in senior high school. The improvement of reading ability relates with the linguistic comprehensive abilities especially with the communicative competence of the students directly. Nowadays, the urgent problem that needs to be solved in English teaching is how to improve the abilities of English reading quickly and effectively. However, traditional English teaching ignores the discourse analyzing and the application of cohesive devices. That is also one of the key factors that students’ reading ability is hard to be improved at present. This thesis mainly introduces the cohesion theory and its application in the reading teaching. By applying the theory to English reading teaching, the students have a good command of the common cohesive devices, cultivate their discourse reading skills, and improve their reading ability.The cohesion theory is the key devices for discourse analysis. It emphasizes that it takes discourse as a whole for English reading teaching and stresses the function and usage of cohesive devices. It is feasible to apply this theory to English reading teaching. The application of cohesion in reading helps students form a good strategy of reading based on text and deal with a text as a whole, knowing how to decode the text efficiently and logically, how to learn to read and how to enjoy reading.Under this background, this research chose the first year students that had the same English reading scores in two similar classes as the experimental subject, in No.1 Senior High School of Handan. According to the experiment, the author tried to find the potential application of cohesive devices into English reading teaching in senior high school from the angle of discourse. This paper shows some feasible measures in order to help and inspire English teachers and also help students improve English reading and studying abilities by some examples and comparison.
