In August 2014, during the visit to Chinese delegation of Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, President Xi Jinping pointed out that "we should improve the performance of three big-ball sports which symbolize sports power"As one of the three big-ball sports, volleyball is of considerable mass foundation in China. Yet volleyball always falls behind football and basketball in terms of overall development, social impact, professionalization, and reserve talents cultivation in particular. This article analyzed and discussed the reserve talents cultivation mode of Beijing men’s volleyball with methods of literature consultation, expert interview and comparative analysis. The problems that reserve talents cultivation of Beijing men’s volleyball is confronting are as follows:1. Pressure of intensive training and game performance, overlooking the importance of education and incorrect perception of relationship between culture level and athletic career are the main factors that influence athletes’balance between trainings and studies.2. Limited by the current personnel management system and athlete’s educational status, it is usually difficult for reserve talents to find a fine job after retirement, which directly influences the quantity and quality of reserve talents.3. Due to the characteristics of volleyball event and marketing environment, the popular "combination of education and training" mode could not be widely used in Beijing.Based on situations mentioned above, this article analyzed the reserve talent cultivation mode of the United States, Brazil and Shanghai, China, and tried to propose a compound talents training mode which merges the advantages of both "province-city-district and county training" mode and "combination of education and training" mode, meanwhile it makes up for the deficiencies and limitations of both modes as well. Here are some suggestions and measures:relevant government departments should fulfill managing functions and provide policy support and financial guarantee (especially to fundamental training units); focus on placement of retired athletes, coordination between education and training/games and enhancement of social impact; deepen the cooperation between sport and education systems to improve the comprehensive ability of athletes; arouse interests and recognition of students and parents through more social activities; adjust the training purpose, standards, content and relevant mechanism.
