Football, after a development of more than one hundred years, is now the world’s most influential sport. As the symbol of the highest level of all football competitions,, the World Cup is no doubt, along with the Olympic Games, the biggest sporting events at the international scale. With the help of the video observation statistics, the data of archives, and mathematical statistics and inductive analysis, etc., we aim to make a research and analysis on the 171 goals in 64 games during the 20 th session of World Cup. We will proceed in five different angles: the method, the area and the timing of the goals, the goal-scoring patterns and the position of athletes. We are to reveal the regularity and characteristics of goals in high-level football, the clear characteristics and developing trends of football tactics today, and to explore the ways one can improve goal-shooting. This study will provide a reference for coaches to guide the training and competition, to draw lessons from the relevant information, and to provide theoretical reference basis for football training and competition. We will come to the following main conclusions:1. The 20 th session of World Cup, with the participation of 32 teams in the finals, includes 64 games and 171 goals(the penalty shoot-out is not counted). Among the goal-scoring patterns, the shoot-on-sight tactic is the main restraining factors, followed by catching, dribbling, header, the penalty kick and the direct free kick.2. During the 20 th session, the most threatening shooting area lays in the 30 meters before the gate where the goal scoring rate is high, will the penalty area and frontier areas is the main goal-scoring area. Catching good scoring opportunities in these two regions can have a fundamental impact on competition. Meanwhile, they are also important for the defending of a team.3. During the 20 th session, in the 90 minutes of the match, the amount of goals made in the second half-time was much higher than the first half-time. The first 20 minutes or 30 minutes of the second half-time mark the peak in terms of the goals-making of the match. Keeping energetic and using flexible tactics are essential for the winning.4. During the 20 th session, the goal-scoring patterns consist mainly on attack of the wingers. Compared with the 18 th and 19 th session of World Cup finals, the techniques of set pieces have had a significant improvement. The attack from all directions has become the mainstream trend of football tactics in the future.5. The main scoring position in the World Cup finals has become the avant-garde instead of the strikers, which shows the diversity of the tactics developed by the teams. The scores form the defenders show the following tendency of the modern football: the disappearance of the absolute separation between defending and attacking. The players now master the techniques and tactics of other positions, which allows them to play both attacking and defensive roles.
