In recent years, cooperative learning has been focusing in educational research. As an ordinary junior high school English teacher, I took time and made an effort to understand and interpret the connotation of cooperative learning. This paper reported a research on how cooperative learning was carried out in junior middle school English classes, with existing problems revealed and solution to these problems proposed. This paper is divided into five parts: The first part is introduction, in which questions were raised and the theoretical and practical significance of the study discussed. The second part provides the theoretical basis of cooperative learning and its definitions were distinguished. The third part reviewed the literature of cooperative learning research in china and abroad as well as that of cooperative learning in junior high school English classrooms. The fourth part introduced how cooperative learning activities were conducted in NO. 12 Middle School of Chengdu(NMSC), including the background, processes and content. The fifth part reported the results of the investigation and analysis of cooperative learning activities in NMSC. This paper aims to explore cooperative learning methods suitable for junior high school English classes, in particular, group activities for different types of classes such as experimental classes and regular classes, and strive to achieve the desired effect. In the process of conducting cooperative learning, teacher is a very important factor, as teacher is expected to design first cooperative learning tasks in a scientific way, then make reasonable arrangements for the content and processes of cooperative learning activities, and finally often reflect on and improve these teaching activities. After cooperative learning was conducted in NMSC for some time, the researcher investigated the state of cooperative learning through questionnaires and interviews. After problems were discovered, solutions were proposed and adjustment made. This study not only can boost the instructional reform initiatives for efficient teaching and learning in NMSC classrooms, but also has wider implications for further teaching reforms in junior high school English classrooms so as to improve the efficiency of English classroom teaching.
