| The issue of teaching quality is highlighted in the period of popularization ofhigher education. How to guarantee the quality of higher education effectively hasbecome common concern to the whole society as a big problem. Student learning anddevelopment should be the focus of the university. Academic advising is imperative asan important way to improve the quality of teaching and student learning outcomes.However, the current practice of university academic advising has many deficiencieswithout significant effect. Most researches on academic advising of undergraduatestudents are still in the field of experience level, without a good combination of collegestudent development and learning theory. Under the guidance of student developmenttheory, this study is trying to explore the content and form of academic advisingfavorable to promoting student development through empirical investigation ofquestionnaires and interviews.Tinto’s dropouts Theory provides a unique perspective and laid the theoreticalfoundation and analytical framework of this paper. Tinto believes that students andacademic and social environment are interacted in two interactive response mode,"academic integration" and "social integration", the degree of integration will affect thestudents’ learning outcomes change. The theoretical framework proposed by Tintohelped to test the school impact on student growth change. To explore academicadvising from the view of "integration" is helpful to get in-depth and detailedunderstanding of student learning conditions, development needs and learning effect.To better understand the status of academic advising of undergraduate students,this study takes H University as a case, and conducts a survey about the condition ofacademic advising of undergraduate students from the "academic integration and socialintegration","academic advising service evaluation" and "academic advising needs".The survey found that: the low level of academic integration and social integration ofcollege students, there are differences between different grades and disciplines category;relatively high satisfaction of academic advising service from most students, but mainlyconcentrated on hardware resources; relatively great demand of academic advising for most students, requirements differ in different disciplines and grades.Combined with the results of survey and interview, this study suggests that thereare main reasons affecting the effects of college students’ academic advising: First,academic advising still stays at the level of providing hardware and resources, not ableto meet the demand of soft advising; Second, the academic advising does not fullyconsider the differences in different grades and disciplines, with a lack of specificity;Third, the students seek guidance or academic support initiatively in weak sense; Fourth,college students lack of interaction platform and opportunity with instructors.Through empirical investigation on conditions of college students’ academicadvising, combining theoretical perspective of "integration", this paper presents anacademic advising mode which is promoting students’"initiative integration": First, weshould change the traditional quality assessment standards, take attention to studentengagement and learning outcomes assessment; Second, we should improve teachingmethods to promote the integration of student learning; Third, we should fully excavateand stimulate the initiative of students, making students to be responsible for theirlearning; Fourth, we should integrate various advising services to build a learningsupport system attracting "initiative integration" by the following way: participation ofmultiple instructors; optimizing the design of extra-curricular activities and projects;building convenient and effective interactive communication platform; meeting theneeds of student development with specificity. We should help and attract students tomake "initiative integration" into college life through effective academic advising,promote their own development and achieve academic success. |
