The development of autonomous individuals is not only of great significance for the lifelong development of the learner, but also a royal road to achieving the efficiency and effectiveness of educating. In the field of pedagogy, it is the core of self-conscious and well-motivated modern education to develop the students’consciousness, habit and ability of autonomous learning. However, in the context of NMET of China, the traditional examination-led English teaching models and methods result in a low efficiency and capability in foreign language teaching and learning at senior high schools. Learner’s autonomy in foreign language learning turns out to determine his or her foreign language learning efficiency. On the other hand, the function and positive effect of learners’autonomy in promoting learning outcomes have been proved and widely recognized today, which is the key to solve students’problem when entering the College Entrance Examination. Therefore, it is of great importance to develop our students’ autonomy in ELT in senior middle schools.What language teaching methods in our classroom may promote students’autonomy? By summarizing studies and research findings on autonomous learning by educators both abroad and at home, and by comparing the teaching principles in Communicative Language Teaching(CLT)method and major approaches for developing students’ autonomous learning ability, the author of this thesis concludes that CTL method can create a classroom teaching and learning environment that can help developing students’ autonomous learning ability. Based on this conclusion, this thesis tries to make clear the links between CLT method and the development of students’abilities for autonomous learning, and illustrates these links through a theoretical model of developing students’ autonomous learning ability through constructing the CLT method in classroom environment. Besides, the research in this thesis also focuses on the correlation between the autonomous learning and students’English achievement.Data collection is conducted mainly through questionnaires, per-while-and-post examination paper, individual interviews and observation after one term. The results, which are analyzed in the quantitative and qualitative methods, show that the teaching mode can develop learners’autonomy in English learning, and the development of learners’ autonomy can definitely improve their achievement in the subject of English.
