Along with economic globalization, a nation’s social environment hasundergone profound changes, so has the national consciousness. The history of socialdevelopment has shown that national consciousness is a "double-edged sword".When people’s national consciousness is weak, it is difficult for the nation to reviveas a whole. However, extreme national consciousness will be a threat to nationalsecurity, reputation and interests. College students’ national consciousness is closelyrelated to the future of a nation. Collegiate education is critical to the formation of anindividual’s view of world and life. In this period, students have strong plasticity, butare also easily distracted. This research has significant value in practice because itconcerns about the situation of current college students’national consciousness.Nation is one of the social morphologies. National consciousness, which reflectsnational existence including characteristics, history, traditions, living conditions, development environment, etc., is an important component of national spirit andprovides impulsion for the national revival. To start with, a survey was made among2400students from9universitiesthrough questionnaire which is designed based on the theory of the structure aboutnational consciousness, proposed by Professor Jin Binggao. Formal reliability andvalidity of the survey design standardized after three tests and two amendments. Next, the characteristics, group differences and factors of the college students’consciousness have been analyzed. The results are as follows:(1) Most students’ national consciousness is in the middle level and the overallresult is in normal distribution;(2) Significant differences are shown in gender, major, grade, politicallandscape and hometown of the students;(3) Science and engineering students have a relatively higher level of nationalconsciousness, while the level of those in comprehensive, medical and arts schools isin the middle. Surprisingly, students from schools of humanity and social sciencehave the lowest level of national consciousness among these three groups; (4) Students who are members of student organizations and who are interestedin daily news generally have stronger national consciousness;(5) With the increase of parents’ education level, college students’ nationalconsciousness increases in the first place and then decreases. The peak value appearswhen the parents’ highest degree is high school. Students whose parents work ingovernment offices, public affairs and service industry have relatively weakernational consciousness comparing to those with parents employed in agriculture, manufacture and commerce industries.Based on the above results, this paper further discusses about therecommendations of training contents and groups to strengthen college students’national consciousness.
