“Patriotic” is not only the traditional virtue of the Chinese nation but also the core ofmodern national spirits. The21stcentury gives the new connotation of patriotism. As thefuture builders and the successors of the Socialism with Chinese Characteristics,undergraduates represent the future of the country and nation’s hope. They are vigorousand sustained great responsibilities. In some degree, young undergraduates`patrioticquality reflects how the Chinese nation position themselves objectively in the era ofglobalization, also shows the efforts from our country and nation on promoting theoverall progress of human civilization among the process of modernization.Patriotism Education of undergraduates is the main task of ideological and politicaleducation in Chinese universities. In this paper, the statements started from thecharacteristics of the times, try to perspective the challenges which patriotism had to faceat the beginning of the21st century from the view of developmental and dialecticalpoints, also the new problems and new situations which had appeared in the process ofpatriotism education of undergraduates until now. And then carry on the rational thinkingabout the current patriotism education in universities. Researched and answered threequestions:First of all, the paper discussed being rational patriotic is the tendency of patriotismfrom the perspective of country’s strategy of peaceful development and the new securityconcepts, and then put forward to the basic connotation of being rational patriotic whichcovered three aspects of rational cognition, rational behavior and emotional expression.Second one is to analyze the irrational patriotic phenomenon existing in the collegestudents from the stamp of the age, the aspects of social ideological trends, physical andmental characteristics of contemporary undergraduates, etc. and then pointed out that therational patriotic education is the necessary measure which will curb the college students’irrational patriotic phenomenon.The last part put forward to several specific measures which tried to strengthen thecontemporary college students’ education of being rational patriotic: First is to build arational system of patriotism education which was guiding by the Socialist Core Values,the system should include four main parts; The core of this system is the ideal faith education, the citizenship education is the basis part, education about personal growthand development is the guidance part, deepening the national interest education is theimportant content; The second is to improve and complete the rational argument of thetraditional patriotic educational contents; The Third is to strengthen the construction ofthe educators; The forth is to strengthen the supervision of patriotic network speech; Thefifth is to create a good environment for the education of being rational patriotic. Thecore idea of these measures is using objective and developmental point of view toanalyze and judge the existed content and education mechanism; furthermore, startedfrom the ideological reality and long-term development of the students, try to makestudents express their patriotic enthusiasm more rationally through the rational patrioticeducation, and make them become adamantine builders and reliable successors of thesocialist countries.
