Psychologists point out that students’ learning motivation and their thirst forknowledge cannot appear naturally; they depend on the teaching scenes set up byteachers. Therefore teachers must set up situations for students to give them a chance tospeak. As for most of the Chinese pupils who lack an English language learningenvironment, it is necessary to create scenes for their language learning. In fact, mostprimary schools in our country still apply the traditional method of English teaching.The traditional teaching methods are indoctrination in education, teaching words andstructures without context, which neglects to cultivate students’ interest and practicalability as well as students as the principal part of teaching. Taking into consideration theabove problems, the author analyzes the current state of English teaching in primaryschools and finds the effectiveness of Situational Language Teaching in solving variousproblems.Focusing on primary school English teaching, this study aims to explore how tocreate effective situations in primary school English classrooms. In this thesis, the studyof situation creating is predominantly based on the relevant theories of SituationalLanguage Teaching, SLA and primary school English teaching and learning. This thesispresents a multiple-case study via the means of classroom observation, video recording,and transcription. In addition, five cases were compiled and examined so as to be forcomparatively analysis. It is indicated that Situational Language Teaching plays anactive role in promoting primary school students’ interest in learning English and as a result improves the effectiveness of students’ English language acquisition.Furthermore, the study shows various measures which create effective situations:The situation should be interesting and inspiring, communicative and, creative and itshould relate to students’ lives. In addition, the study also illustrates some teachingmethods for teachers on how to create effective situations.Despite the limitations the author does hope this study could be of some value forfuture research on Situational Language Teaching and of some help in improving theeffectiveness of English classroom teaching for primary schools by employing theSituational Language Teaching method.
