In order to be fit for the development of English study, the present study applies Formative Assessment in the Teaching of Senior High School English Writing. There are two main research questions in the thesis. The first one is whether the Formative Assessment can help arouse the students’ interests in English writing. The second one is whether the Formative Assessment can improve their English writing proficiency.In this research, the subject includes82students of two classes from a Senior High School in Tianjin. One class is the experimental class, in which the Formative Assessment in English writing is applied. The other is the control class, in which the traditional assessment is used in English writing. The research instruments are writing tests and questionnaires. The statistic software SPSS17.0is used to process the data in this research.Before the experiment was conducted, a pre-test was given in the two classes, and the data of their scores prove that there are no significant differences between them. The questionnaires were used to collect data about the views of learners on writing. In the experimental class, the student self-assessment, peer-assessment and teacher-assessment were applied respectively in each writing task in the whole process of students’ writing assessment. Thus the students can take part in the assessing activity and reflect on their writing work. After the experiment was done, the post-test of English writing was set in the two classes, and the post-questionnaires are distributed in the experimental class. The results of the study proved that the Formative Assessment has a positive effect on the improvement of students’ writing skills. After fifteen weeks’ experiment, the students of the experiment class, in which the Formative Assessment was applied, had a significant improvement in their English writing scores, and also showed more interests in English writing. So, it demonstrates that the two hypotheses in this study are true. The Formative Assessment can help arouse the interests of learning English writing among the high school students. The Formative Assessment can improve the learners’ English writing skills. In the assessment example part, some implications are given. It is hoped that these suggestions will help the teachers in their teaching of English writing.
