The Problems Research Of Green Campus Construction

Creating a green campus is gaining increasing concern. Initiated in France, it isspreading worldwide. In the US, the University of Washington launched a greenuniversity plan while in Canada, the University of Waterloo started the green campus.In China, Tsinghua University took lead in creating a green campus since1998. It isthe first Chinese university to advocate green campus. At present, in TsinghuaUniversity, promising results are shown in building an ecological campus landscape,and in carrying out eco-friendly teaching and research activities. Many otheruniversities in China have also gained good achievements in creating green campuses,yet, as a whole, problems still exist. The purpose of this study is to analyze problemsin creating a green university campus. The study explained the meaning andsignificance of creating a green campus, with an emphasis on the guiding role ofsustainable development. Then, case analyses were done on the present situation andproblems in creating a green campus. The following issues are discussed: the lack ofknowledge on environmental protection among staff and students, the high-levelconstruction of campus landscape, aging buildings and facilities and the laggingbehind of the management system. On the basis of the above, the article analyzed thecause of problems and suggested the countermeasure. The countermeasure andsuggestion include: establish a correct concept of green campus and training ofteachers and students of sustainable development concept and green campusawareness; diversify ecological construction of university campus at a high level;intensify our efforts to save and recycle campus resources, which involves ecologicalfacilities like green building and waste water treatment system; improve theevaluation system of college campus green; and establishing and improving greencampus management with more input in capital and talent as a foundation of creatinggreen campus.
