This paper takes Sports and Games of Ancient Egypt of Wolfgang Decker, theGerman sports historian, as the research object to study the material selection,demonstration method, and the study of ancient Egyptian history. The aim of thispaper is to explore the functions of the book in the study of ancient Egyptian cultureand its referential significance to modern sports and games.This paper is divided into four parts:First, the original purpose of Wolfgang Decker in Sports and Games of AncientEgypt is introduced, followed by introduction of Decker including his personalbackground and field of academic research, etc. A more detailed insight into theauthor helps to better understand and master his methodology of historical science.The second part is presented with the definitions of the concepts of sports andgames first, and then it will respectively introduce the definition and development ofsports and games from the perspective of etymology and their historicaldevelopments.The third part focuses on elaborating of methodology of Sports and Games ofAncient Egypt, including the material selection, classification principles and methodof reasoning and demonstration of sports and games.On the basis of historical knowledge and literature, the final part analyzes thefunctions and contributions of Sports and Games of Ancient Egypt in studying ancientEgyptian history and sports history, and studies the possibilities of comparative studyof Chinese and Western sports.
