| Reading has long been acknowledged as a key part of senior middle schoolEnglish teaching. However, the present circumstances and effects of the teaching ofreading are not so ideal, mainly because of the negligence of reading skills andstrategies. This thesis tries to probe into the effects of classroom reading strategyinstruction and reading belief upon improving students’reading ability. This research is based on learning strategies of second language learning andalso the theories related to reading strategies. The research is based upon an empiricalstudy with90students from two paralleling classes in Grade Two of Fenhu SeniorMiddle School as my research subjects. In this research, the students were firstsurveyed and interviewed about whether they have mastered some necessary readingstrategies in order to find their strengths and weaknesses in reading. Meanwhile, thestudents were tested about their reading abilities. Afterwards, the class was trainedpurposefully in the regular classes, special reading strategies classes and alsoafter-class reading instructions and supervision. Finally, the students were surveyedwith the same questions and tested with similar reading exercises after the research tosee how much they had improved. As to the effects of students’ reading beliefs on students’ reading strategies, several students at different levels are selected to have a talk and then analyze themarks in the pre-test and post-test.It is shown that students having strong beliefs inreading strategies have great improvement in English reading test after the four-mouthtraining and the other students make little progress. After comparing students’ marks before and after the training, the writer foundthat there appeared great progress in the marks of training class after the training. Thisproves this training is very effective and efficient. Therefore, English teachers shouldraise their awareness of the importance of reading strategy training in their readingclasses, and make every effort to improve the quality of their reading teaching, whichwill serve as a necessity to improve students’ reading abilities. |
