Vocabulary teaching is the basis of English teaching, and at the same time, it isa difficult point. It is a misunderstanding in vocabulary teaching that the teachersthink the students should take care of their own vocabulary learning by themselves.As a result, teachers just teach the pronunciation of each word and list severalsentences to illustrate its usage. The students are required to recite vocabulary afterclass, and it becomes a huge burden for them because they lack strategies and thereis too much vocabulary to recite without the teacher’s guidance. Gradually, itbecomes a nightmare to recite English vocabulary and learn English. Throughseveral years’ vocabulary teaching, the author witnessed the effect of vocabularyteaching is unsatisfactory and even misleading in the students’ further English study.Although teachers cannot do the students’ job to remember vocabulary, andexperience the process of input and output, which need self-study after class,teachers can guide and assist students to grasp effective methods to promote theirself-study.The invention of Internet brings great change to people’s life. In the InternetAge, the ways we live and work have been changed, meanwhile, the way studentsstudy has been influenced as well. At the same time, the Internet offers the studentsabundant resources for vocabulary study. As a response to the trend of our times,vocabulary teaching is supposed to make full use of the availability to give the students more colorful, flexible and vivid experience of learning vocabulary.Since1980’s, metacognitive strategy has aroused the scholars’ attention athome and abroad, and one of the reasons are it can make the students become themaster of their own study, and help them study by themselves. Metacognitivestrategies help the students to plan, monitor and assess the students’ study process,which play an important role in ESL. The study of metacognitive strategy trainingproves students can get to know and grasp metacognitive strategies, and moreimportantly, internalize them into their study.This paper holds that teacher can train students during regular class how toassess the present vocabulary level, and after that, teach them how to set goals andmake plans. The teacher teaches the students to choose proper materials to study, andassigns the students extracurricular tasks which require them to use the Internetresource. During the process, the students are required to choose different learningstrategies according to the tasks, monitor their study and assess their study. Theauthor integrated metacognitive strategy training into regular teaching, and65students in Grade1of high school are trained for a whole semester. After that, theeffectiveness of this training is analyzed by the method of case study and statisticalanalysis. The result shows metacognitive training is helpful for vocabulary study,and most students think it promotes efficiency of vocabulary study, strengthens theirself-confidence of studying English vocabulary and enlarges their vocabulary.
